Your rage- and bafflement-inducing fun for the day: a review of HBO's upcoming A Game of Thrones adaptation which declares that girls don't read fantasy unless there's sex to draw them in. Which. I just. What. I personally haven't read any of George R. R. Martin's books and wasn't planning on watching the show, but here I sit next to five different fantasy novels written by women, all of which have significant (if not majority) female fanbases, two of which were written for the female fanbase in mind, plus a science fiction anthology with several female writers and illustrators, and two volumes of a supernatural comic written and drawn by a woman, and a DVD of the anime based on another supernatural comic written and drawn by a woman, and a Christmas card with characters from Doctor Who drawn on it by a woman, and a giant towel that reads DON'T PANIC!, and my roommate is watching a sci-fi anime on her laptop next to dolls from another sci-fi anime, and the background for my phone has a picture of the TARDIS--the TARDIS which happens to be sitting on top of my dresser along with seven other Doctor Who figures--and there are six separate Pokemon games within reach, and I am wearing a T-Shirt from a sci-fi webcomic, and on the wall there are posters for a fantasy anime and a horror anime, and last night my friends and I were watching one of the most famous fantasy anime ever made, and Ms. Ginia Bellafante, I don't know what kind of world you live in, but if I or any of my friends were in a book club and was asked to choose between a Lorrie Meers novel and The Hobbit, they would not go with the one you think they should. Although possibly this is because none of us know who Lorrie Meers is, which actually helps my point even more. In conclusion: I have just written one of the longest sentences in the world, which I sometimes do, and which may be learned out of me by the sci-fi/fantasy writers' workshop I am taking this summer with several other women. Doris Egan posted a more in-depth response than I did, but then, Doris Egan is a published fantasy author, although I am given to understand this combined with her gender makes her akin to a unicorn. As am I. And all my friends. And my mother. And my grandmother. And almost every woman I met through my family in my entire life. And the creators of over half the books and comics in my room. And this paragraph is seriously too long so I am going to end it now. Except for the note that I am now actually considering watching A Game of Thrones, if only to give this woman the vapors.

I don't know about you but I read The Lord of the Rings for the rampant uncensored sex.

But of course! Why else would we possibly be interested in it? Even if fantasy novels did have any kind of value to them, surely we girls would realize them for the childish things that they are. Surely!

I mean, it's not like fantasy can say anything about the real world in the same way that sexy Romans or sweary cowboys can!

(disclaimer: I am also a big fan of both Romans and cowboys, however unlike this reviewer I can enjoy more than one type of thing)

That block o' text had the most fabulous run-on sentence my brain has ever had the privilege to not be able to parse due to meltingnesses! Good Job! :D

You and all your female friends & relatives are my favoritest unicorns ever, just so you know ;)

Don't forget all those counterfeit women who are going to be teaching us at the Clarions. I wonder, if I ask nice, d'you think they'll let me touch their horns?

Hell, Clarion West is run by a pair of women--clearly we are living in some freakish dimension where up is down and black is white and dogs are tigers.

Just. What. I'm so thankful that I don't live in Ginia Bellafante's world.

Exactly! All this defense of the series has actually made it sound pretty interesting. Assuming my ladyparts don't get in the way.

God, people are assholes. I have to self-declare being part of the unicorn variety as well, as I have been anxiously anticipating the HBO adaptation of one of my favourite fantasy series for quite some time XD

You might appreciate (fellow SFF writer) Dana Hunter's take. (Hint: the second sentence is "I've spent most of the week now trying to determine which planet [Ginia Bellafonte is] from.")

My favorite line of Dana's was:

P.S. I get the impression from your article that you must have obtained a college education of some description. Were I you, I'd be asking for my money back.

Indeeeed *falls over into a heap of ferret giggles*
