Things I Have Learned in the Past Five Minutes: qamuSHa' is Klingon for "I love you", but it's usually expressed with nonverbal growls, so it doesn't have nearly the full effect on paper.

ETA: I don't think I'll ever be in a situation where I could use this, but I find it extremely amusing that it's not hard to find out that ngaghchuqbogh loDpu' be'pu' ghap DIbvaD wo'lIj vuD nuq means "So, what are your Empire's thoughts on gay marriage?" Research is fun!

*g* In a former life I dated a Trekkie and spoke a little Klingon. And boy, it took my dad about ten years to get past that ... *headdesk*

I was about to ask if that meant 'hello', because I mostly skimmed through the lists to find interesting phrases (alas, the one I really really want once I heard it existed--"great men do not seek greatness; it is thrust upon them"--is rather difficult to find the actual translation for), but then I remembered that I did learn that they don't say hello. So does that mean 'what do you want?', or am I totally off-base?

It's as close to a greeting as Klingon (or tlIngan-Hol, if I remember rightly) ever gets - and now I can't even remember what it means! It might mean "great success" but it might also mean "what do you want?" - though the vague memories I have of Klingon grammar suggest that it's the former. (The suffix -a' means "big", IIRC.)

According to my Internets, it's tlhIngan-Hol--and (I did have to Google this, 'cause I didn't already have it in the fic) qapla' does mean "great success". ...and by god, if I never thought I was geeky before...

Curse that fiddly, silent little 'h'! Yes.

Hey, nice to know I've upped your dork quotient for the day :)
