Thoughts on having seen (as well as the episodes that came between them) Castrovalva, Time-Flight, and The King's Demons: if Delgado!Master's trademark is allying himself with/controlling devious alien species who inevitably betray him, is Ainley!Master's trademark Pretending To Be Someone Else? Because, goddammit, he's actually really good at it, even if he is helped by makeup or a convenient change in facial hair. The only reason I caught it in The King's Demons was because of the first two times, both of which blew my mind. I may still prefer Delgado, but, y'know, Ainley's got some skills too. Now if he would just stop using that damn laugh so much...

DAD: So, what's up today?
ME: Not much.
DAD: You always say that.
ME: Mm...no, really, not much.
DAD: That always means there was stuff and you just don't want to tell me about it.
ME: Weeelllll...I don't think you want to hear about it...
DAD: Oh, try me. What was there?
ME: ...Doctor Who porn?
DAD: *pause* Right. Not much.
ME: It's not like I told you which characters were involved. You haven't even met them! ...technically.

I love having a family aware of my inclinations.

(And it's true, he hasn't--having not seen much of the old series, he's no idea what Five even looks like, and I only just got him to watch Utopia tonight. Long story. I'm looking forward to his reaction to The Phone Call.)

A re-watching of Terror of the Autons and then, later, a re-reading of a DW/LoM crossover makes me think about something and then look it up--and, yes, Delgado!Master did make his exit in 1973. I have no idea how the Master's personal chronology could be twisted to make that as interesting as it should be--

Since every DW fan on my flist seems to be doing that quote meme, well, why not.

"I don't know, rocket fire at long range--somehow it lacks that personal touch." - the Master, Frontier in Space, about to fire a missile at a spaceship containing the Doctor and Jo

(Just rewatched Claws of Axos, actually. It isn't a very good episode for Jo, is it? She just sort of...screams. Sometimes there is flailing. There is that infamous "let's run off together, because we are both Time Lords--yes, that's totally the reason for it, there is no other reason, we are running off together because we are both Time Lords" bit, though, and some lovely instances of the Brig sticking it to the bureaucracy, which I'm never going to object to.)

So, I just finished Logopolis.

And I've also seen, but not written up, Destiny of the Daleks, City of Death, Shada, Meglos, Full Circle, State of Decay, Warrior's Gate, and The Keeper of Traken.

That's rather a lot, isn't it?

I wish I had something terribly interesting to say about all of these things. I did rather like Romana II, and her intro amused the hell out of me (particularly the Doctor's reaction to her "barbarian queen" option--clearly, the idea of Leela with cleavage is unsettling), and she got quite a nice send-off, I thought. Going off to do something productive and important.

You know what I'm going to do? Instead of huge write-ups, I'm just going to say a couple things I liked about each episode. That's easier.

...Five, eh?

...well, let's get on with it, then.

Subject: and which companion is k-9 most associated with, anyway?
Security: Public
Tags:apparently i really like the master, doctor who, ramblings, yes i am really very odd

A question of sorts, for the few Whofans over here: if a companion goes through more than one Doctor, which Doctor do you associate them with? I, having just watched a few New Who vids featuring Rose, realized that I associate her more with Nine than with Ten; Ten, for me, is more Martha. And then I associate Sarah Jane much more with Four than with Three, although I think I've actually seen more of her episodes with the latter. Jack indisputably goes with Nine in my mind; from what I can tell, Tegan and Nyssa, despite having originated with Four, are very associated with Five, and the same goes for Adric. What about Peri and Mel? All I've heard indicates that Peri is seen as Six's girl, but Seven's is Ace, so does Mel get anyone at all? Do I associate Ben and Polly with Two merely because he's the only one I've seen them with (and even then, not much; just a very crackly audio-and-stills of The Highlanders), or are they actually considered to be more part of One's massive entourage?

(And when we consider the companions who have seen many Doctors--the Brig and Sarah Jane, namely--do we associate them with that at all, or do we still think of them with their primary Doctors, e.g. Three and Four?)

...and is the Master more associated with Three, Five, or Ten?

SO MANY QUESTIONS.

Remember my desire to associate Avril Lavigne's 'Girlfriend' with the Master? Of course you do. Then you must be unspeakably thrilled to know that [info]rionaleonhart has keyed me in to the fact that a vid for such actually exists, and it is unbelievably awesome, even if the vidder had to leave it unfinished due to a sudden attack of taste. (Fie, I say. A proper vidder should have no such thing.) In any case, behold, one of the greatest things that this or any other world has created.

I'm sure I've hit a new low when--although this is not actually a recent thing--that one Avril Lavigne song, you know, the one that goes Hey-hey you-you I don't like your girlfriend, no-way no-way you should get a new one, hey-hey you-you I could be your girlfriend, reminds me of the Master. (I don't even know any of the lyrics besides those. Well, that and She's like, so whatever, but I have no idea where that one goes.)

I'm going to put Three away for a while, I think, until I finally decide to watch Inferno (and probably one of the other Liz episodes, too); I've been sidetracked long enough, and shall now head back to Four, Romana, and the Key to Time, until I go back and watch The Seeds of Doom because I haven't seen nearly enough Four-Sarah Jane and that was the last regular appearance of UNIT anyway. Allons-y!

Since everyone and their mother is talking about how Steven Moffat is taking over as executive producer for Doctor Who in the fifth season, I might as well share my limited, meandering, inconclusive thoughts on the issue: hey, I really, really liked The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and Blink (my thoughts on The Girl in the Fireplace have changed a bit over time, but I can at least say that it had rather a lot of good bits, and hey, it turns out she wasn't the first woman-from-the-past to fall in love with the guy; clearly she cannot be blamed for it, as there is a precedent), and, having just watched The Curse of Fatal Death, I can definitely say he's got the fanboy chops to do it, so why not. Also, even if we're losing All Gay All The Time RTD, Steven Moffat was the guy who invented Captain Jack, so there really is not going to be any trouble on that front.

(On the subject, as it has been mentioned elsewhere, of Steven Moffat perhaps wanting to make That One Character a companion--sure, she's cool and all, but there's a reason the show only started when the Doctor picked up Ian and Barbara, y'all. Ya gotta have a human in there. Or Romana. But I think Romana was probably just an exception all-around.)

Probably I should have linked this earlier, but, for the Whofans here who aren't part of the fandom at large and thus might not have heard of this--some unparalleled genius listened to Skullcrusher Mountain, perhaps too many times, and thought "why, yes! This song is totally the Master's big dorky evil declaration of love to the Doctor!", and then they made this, which is just too awesome for words:

It features both New Who and Old Who, so--[info]swingerzetta , I'm looking at you--if you're familiar with the former but not the latter, it's actually still very watchable, as long as you know the dynamic. And if you know the song, well, you're pretty much golden. (The bit about the half-pony half-monkey monster, in particular, will just make you cackle.)

Hey, [info]selenak! I saw Julie Be-enz, I saw Julie Be-enz!

...very briefly, because I didn't have enough money for an autograph and she didn't look very happy to be there anyway, but I still saw her.

Yes, I was at Emerald City Comicon, and I didn't actually do much there besides briefly see Julie Benz and grab a few books (the new Courtney Crumrin collection--damn, they certainly took their time with that one--and a couple Wondermark books; Malki! himself was there, and he was very sweet and self-effacing) and a Master action figure--ahahah, it is horrible, and it only comes with the laser screwdriver, but I had to get it. Alas, I didn't have enough money to get Jack (in his Empty Child attire) or the Weeping Angel, and I would've liked to get K-9, but he only came with a Rose I already had...when are they going to make a Donna figure? They need to make a Donna figure. And a Sarah Jane figure. And a Jack figure in something other than his Empty Child attire, although I suppose that would be a Torchwood figure.

You know, I'm far too interested in things that I never use for anything other than decorative purposes. I know that other people have it far worse--I confine my madness to Doctor Who, for the most part--but it's still a bit odd to realize that I've just spent $50 on action figures. (Not today. Today was only $12. Last year at Comicon proper, however...)

I am not going to put my Ten and Master figures in a compromising position. I am not. That would be crude. But if I did, Martha, Rose, and the TARDIS would get to watch. It's only fair.
