Thoughts on having seen (as well as the episodes that came between them) Castrovalva, Time-Flight, and The King's Demons: if Delgado!Master's trademark is allying himself with/controlling devious alien species who inevitably betray him, is Ainley!Master's trademark Pretending To Be Someone Else? Because, goddammit, he's actually really good at it, even if he is helped by makeup or a convenient change in facial hair. The only reason I caught it in The King's Demons was because of the first two times, both of which blew my mind. I may still prefer Delgado, but, y'know, Ainley's got some skills too. Now if he would just stop using that damn laugh so much...

DAD: So, what's up today?
ME: Not much.
DAD: You always say that.
ME: Mm...no, really, not much.
DAD: That always means there was stuff and you just don't want to tell me about it.
ME: Weeelllll...I don't think you want to hear about it...
DAD: Oh, try me. What was there?
ME: ...Doctor Who porn?
DAD: *pause* Right. Not much.
ME: It's not like I told you which characters were involved. You haven't even met them! ...technically.

I love having a family aware of my inclinations.

(And it's true, he hasn't--having not seen much of the old series, he's no idea what Five even looks like, and I only just got him to watch Utopia tonight. Long story. I'm looking forward to his reaction to The Phone Call.)

Hey, you know who the next Doctor should be if Rusty/Moffat wants to keep the vague trend of hiring a Scotsman and the definite trend of making the show gaytastic? Alan Cumming.

A re-watching of Terror of the Autons and then, later, a re-reading of a DW/LoM crossover makes me think about something and then look it up--and, yes, Delgado!Master did make his exit in 1973. I have no idea how the Master's personal chronology could be twisted to make that as interesting as it should be--

I mean, if meeting himself gave the Brig a nervous breakdown--

Has anyone else noticed that the amount of time one has to do things is inversely proportional to the amount of things one actually gets done?

It's summer, and I have somewhere in the vicinity of thirteen hours every day in which I can do whatever I want; this leads to, obviously, not wanting to do anything. I don't want to write, I only sort of want to vid (and I get frustrated by knowing that I won't actually be able to finish it until a week and a half from now, when the season finale of Doctor Who gives me the clips I'm really, really hoping it's going to have), I don't want to draw, I don't even really want to watch old episodes of Doctor Who--and it occurs to me, hey, I wanted to do these things a lot more when I didn't have so much time to do them in. It was so much more satisfying to spend an hour and a half writing when I knew I only had three hours to do it in. Which makes me realize that 1) I really, really want it to be September already and 2) I really, really need a job, but I can't get a job until September because I'm only going to be living here until September, and I'm rather doubting employers, even part-time employers, will want to hire someone who is for sure gone in two months. Auuuuugh.

You know, I don't believe I've made a vid yet that didn't suffer from horrendous technical difficulties--although A Day in the Life really only suffered an inability to find the bits I wanted amidst all the inexplicably ten-minute-long clips WMM had handily cut the episodes into--but this, oh, this takes the cake. This is not something I can blame on a faulty computer. This is just really, really, completely unexplainable. So let me elaborate!

As I've mentioned, the song I wanted to use was an m4a file which turned out not to work in Windows Movie Maker; this made me sad and upset, but [info]shizuka_blooms gave me a link to a website that converts media files and thus allowed me to make it an mp3 file instead; this made me happy and not-upset. So I started making the vid! And it was going very well. Except I noticed a bit of lag time with the audio--if I started it from the top, there wasn't a problem; if I started it even a second later, it would inexplicably be a little behind where it was supposed to be. For example, if at twenty seconds in, there was supposed to be the lyric "it's time to shine", it would for some reason be playing a lyric that came a few seconds before that. (This is purely an example. I am far from twenty seconds into this vid. I haven't even gotten to the lyrics yet--still on the opening instrumentals, which still suffer the same problem.) This was very annoying.

So I restarted, because, hey, restarting cures many things. Nope. Still there. Take out the song and put it back in again? Nope. I checked another vid file--that one was working fine. Restarted again. Nope. Closed down all other programs. Nope. Hey, that K-Lite Codec thing really has an insane amount of icons on my toolbar--uninstall that? Nope, and now even starting at the top doesn't work, so reinstall. Hrm. Ooh, there's a new Windows Update! Will that fix it? That will probably fix it. Installed. Did not fix it. Made things worse, actually; for some reason, everything was reeeeally slow when it finished updating, and the tablet function of the laptop was barely working, and then it just sort of froze, so I did a forced restart. Everything seemed to be back to normal after that--except, no, for some reasons all my Collections folders in WMM have been completely wiped, so I'm going to have to reupload...let's see...52 episodes of Doctor Who, plus 34 of Heroes and 16 of Life on Mars...and every episode takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to upload, so, uh, at this point this whole thing is getting kind of ridiculous. WHAT IS GOING ON. And, no, it still doesn't work. Tried putting the song in the other vid file--same problem. SO.

1) [info]shizuka_blooms, have you ever had any problems with a song converted by that website?
2) Has anyone here ever had similiar problems with Windows Movie Maker?
3) Will anyone buy me some ridiculously expensive new movie-making software?
4) Have I offended God in some way? Does He have some fundamental objection to the song, or perhaps vids in general?
5) Is there some physical representation of Windows Update that I can punch in the face?

EDIT: FIXED YAY

auuuuuuuuuuuuugh

Okay, so, the song I want to use in my next vid, the vid I have been vaguely planning for weeks, the vid that will finally allow me to get off my ass and get back into vidding, is an m4a file. I thought there was nothing wrong with this! m4a files do, after all, play in Windows Media Player; clearly they are different from no other file. Ahahahahahaha NO. No, Windows Movie Maker refuses to acknowledge that m4a files even exist, APPARENTLY. So. Does anybody here know either

1) How to convert an m4a file into an mp3 file, or
2) Where one could acquire a copy of Carbon Leaf's "Echo Echo Shine" that is not an m4a file?

Because that would be really helpful and stop me from breaking down quietly into an unproductive heap. And you don't want that to happen, do you? You want to see a really bouncy, joyous New Who vid, don't you? One with lots of Donna in it, but also Rose and Martha and fair bits of Jack and Sarah Jane? You want that, right?

...please?

EDIT: Aaaand found! *hugs [info]shizuka_blooms muchly, for she is awesome*

Since every DW fan on my flist seems to be doing that quote meme, well, why not.

"I don't know, rocket fire at long range--somehow it lacks that personal touch." - the Master, Frontier in Space, about to fire a missile at a spaceship containing the Doctor and Jo

(Just rewatched Claws of Axos, actually. It isn't a very good episode for Jo, is it? She just sort of...screams. Sometimes there is flailing. There is that infamous "let's run off together, because we are both Time Lords--yes, that's totally the reason for it, there is no other reason, we are running off together because we are both Time Lords" bit, though, and some lovely instances of the Brig sticking it to the bureaucracy, which I'm never going to object to.)

So, uh, they're not going to kill her, right? I mean, they only killed Astrid because she was a one-shot character anyway, they needed an excuse to get her out of the picture, and they only killed Adric because he was unpopular, and admittedly I've no idea why they killed Katarina and Sara but they were basically only one- or two-shot characters anyway, and Donna is not a one-shot character and decidedly not unpopular so clearly they have no reason to kill her, right?

...you know, over the past couple months, I've started to grow very apprehensive of weekends. Gee. Wonder why. But there's only two more to worry about, and then, gah. Gah.

Tags:doctor who, gay gay gay, i like actors, i like movies, there will be blood, yes i am really very odd

So, uh, There Will Be Blood. Was it...supposed to be kinda gay? I mean, probably not, movies like that usually aren't meant to have that particular brand of subtext, but Daniel and Eli did seem kinda obsessed with each other and then there was the ending with Eli sobbing about all those horrible non-specific sins he'd committed and, you know, the idea of Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano, while admittedly a little disturbing, is certainly an interesting one. And Eli could totally go on about how the infinite forgiveness of God made it okay if they just repented afterwards, except Daniel would just be like "fuck no" and then they'd just have more angry, manipulative sex and that kind of fucked-up relationship would make quite a logical lead-up to the ending of the movie. It would. You know it would.

If you go by the actors' ages, which are presumably about the same as the characters', you get a 29-year difference, which would be the largest age difference I've ever shipped, not counting anything to do with Doctor Who because that would be like cheating.

So I guess there is this meme? And, hey, why not.

You know how sometimes people on your friend's list post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when are they working THERE? Since when are they dating HIM/HER? since when???" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you *should* already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

Tags:doctor who, the internet is fascinating, yes i am really very odd

I know this is old news to most Whovians, but it's new to me, so I felt compelled to make a few comments on That One Poll About The Companions.

1) Not surprised in the least that Sarah Jane won; very happy, in fact. Sarah Jane is my homegirl. And, I suspect, the homegirl of many.
2) Both surprised and not surprised that Rose got second; on one hand, she's crazy popular, on the other hand, I would've expected Romana II to get it. But Romana II got fifth, which is something, I guess.
3) Yay for Martha overcoming the nay-sayers and at least getting third! Still less than Rose--I wonder what the actual numbers were; I know Sarah Jane got more votes than the next two combined, which is kind of insanely awesome.
4) Ace and Romana II in fourth and fifth; no surprises, although, like I said, I would've thought Romana II would get second. Still, both high-ups.
5) JAMIE IN SIXTH. YES. MORE POPULAR THAN CAPTAIN JACK. Whom I would have expected to score higher than seventh, but I'm still all smug about Jamie, so I'm not thinking about it much.
6) Good to see Leela getting a spot in the top ten, if only barely; a little surprised that Tegan made it, and a bit miffed that the Brigadier didn't quite. Seriously? He couldn't beat Tegan? Admittedly I don't dislike Tegan--most of the time--but the Brig deserved a spot in the top ten. Because he's awesome.
7) Peri was kinda popular, apparently? Huh. That...goes against pretty much everything I've heard about her. Must be the cleavage.
8) Barbara and Zoe: yes. Charley, no idea; same with Turlough. Jo only gets seventeenth? Awww. But it's better than thirty-fifth, I suppose.
9) I'm assuming this was before the fourth season, because there is no way Donna would only get twenty-third if the poll was taken right now.
10) Alas, poor Liz, for having so few episodes, and poor Evelyn and Frobisher, for being audio-only! (I defend them despite never having actually heard them. I'm like that.) I guess Charley's more popular in terms of the audios, given her position as twelfth. Why don't the old lady and the talking penguin outrank the standard human girl? Woe.
11) Sally Sparrow's considered a companion? Huh.
12) Poor, poor Grace. *pets her* It's not her fault she was only used in the crappy, crappy movie.
13) ...Adric got negative points? STOP MAKING ME FEEL BAD, FANDOM. I CAN'T BE THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO KIND OF LIKES HIM.
14) Man, I guess people really hate Ben. I mean, he scored even lower than Adric! And...Mike Yates, for some reason. I never thought about Mike Yates much one way or the other. Maybe that's what killed him.
15) ...Adric got negative points?

[info]selenak, I don't know if you've seen this yet, but it is right up your alley--(Boulevard of) Broken Dreams, a DW vid that takes four different songs--one for Rose, one for Martha, one for Runaway Bride Donna, and a bit of one for the Doctor--and melds them all together completely brilliantly, and it's just wonderful and perfect and *flails*. [info]harena[info]swingerzetta, any of the others here who watch Doctor Who--this is just awesome.
