Hey, Terrible US Life on Mars has apparently cast a Ray--so Annoying Older Mustached Guy isn't a replacement for him and Chris? Does that mean they're kicking him out? Please, let that mean they're kicking him out. On the other hand, I haven't heard anything about a Chris, and you really need a Chris to balance out Ray, and I'm kind of terrified of what this show would do with Ray anyway, so...it is quite possible that this is in no way good news. Still, y'know, it implies some kind of Change, and that is what I am desperately hoping this show will get.

A re-watching of Terror of the Autons and then, later, a re-reading of a DW/LoM crossover makes me think about something and then look it up--and, yes, Delgado!Master did make his exit in 1973. I have no idea how the Master's personal chronology could be twisted to make that as interesting as it should be--

I mean, if meeting himself gave the Brig a nervous breakdown--

TERRIBLE US LIFE ON MARS PILOT IS TERRIBLE.

...unfortunately, it's not terrible enough to get immediately canceled, unless the US television-viewing public displays a sudden and astonishing burst of scruples. I wouldn't say it's good--oh, lord would I not say that--but it's not quite OH DAVID E KELLEY NO material, and people who haven't seen the original would probably think it was okay. Admittedly, that would be because the okay bits were directly copied from the original. And because they wouldn't have been spoiled by the glory of John Simm and Phillip Glenister. There is at least one bit of good news--the new Annie ain't half bad, even if she is conventionally attractive, and she appears to be inexplicably redheaded rather than inexplicably blond, which I consider to be acceptable for some reason. Aside from that? It's meh. I had only a couple of genuine "wait, what?" moments; the rest of it was just a general field of annoyance.

There is a moment in here that, I think, perfectly encapsulates why this pilot irritates me. In the original, when Sam first hears the TV talking to him, he's still dressed--he's unbuttoned his shirt, but there's an undershirt underneath that. In this, he's completely shirtless. To show off his manly, manly muscles. And that, in a nutshell, is why I didn't like it.

Oh god, they've released the trailer for the US version of Life on Mars.

...he's too muscular.

And he doesn't wear the hair nearly as well.

And Colm Meany, I'm sorry, you're trying very hard, but you're no Phillip Glenister.

And the voiceover and the background music just make me wince.

....and is Annie blond?

*sighs and goes back to Doctor Who, which has already gotten over its thankfully brief bit of Americanization and will never suffer from it again*

You know, I was going to say "man, that actor looks a lot like Sam, doesn't he", but then I remembered which show I was talking about and I had to clarify Sam Oliver; there are way, way too many damn Sams. (And all of their names end with -er. No, seriously. Oliver, Winchester, Tyler, Carter...it's a conspiracy of something, I'm sure.) Also, AHAHAHA I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DID THAT.

Tagged by [info]shizuka_blooms : List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.

Oh, gosh. Let's see. Music, music, music...*ponders*

1) Fiona Apple - "Tymps (The Sick in the Head Song)"
Those boom times went bust
My feet of clay, they dried to dust
The red isn't the red we painted
Its just rust
And the signature thing
That used to bring a following
I have trouble now

Even remembering

I get the majority of my music off of fanmixes. This came from one for Mylar. I like it! It is surprisingly bouncy. Also, I totally did not know it was Fiona Apple; her name does not appear anywhere on the file, so I thought it was by some band called Tymps. I fail at knowing things about music.

2) No Doubt - "Bathwater"
I still love to wash in your old bathwater
Make me feel like I couldn't love another
I can't help it... you're my kind of man

I can't remember where I got this, but it's another sneakily bouncy song. I like bouncy! I also like sneaky.

3) Garbage - "The World Is Not Enough"
The world is not enough
But it is such a perfect place to start, my love
And if you're strong enough
Together we can take the world apart, my love

Moar Mylar. I think. Maybe. Or maybe I just associate it with Mylar, which would make sense. And I am being sneaky and combining this with Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name", because 1) they are both Bond movie songs and 2) I associate both of them with Sylar. (And also the Master, but we're going to get to him next.) "You Know My Name", incidentally, is the song that inspired a particularly nasty part of the still-unfinished WWII AU. It's mean. Actually, it was originally going to be used in a Victorian stage magician AU, where it would have been even meaner, but it shifted into something a little more bearable. Dammit, one of these days I really need to get back to that story.

4) Pink - "Cuz I Can"
So I'll cash my checks and place my bets
And hope I'll always win
But even if I don't I'm fucked because
I live a life of sin
But it's alright
I don't give a damn
I don't play your rules I make my own
Tonight
I'll do what I want
Cuz I can
(ice cream, ice cream, we all want ice cream)

I associate this song with the Master. In fact, I sort of want to vid him to it. It's just so...him. (And yes, I have a few ideas as to what the ice cream would be.) Also, bouncy!

5) The Feeling - "I Love It When You Call"
Oh, I-I-I-I-I-I
I'm flipping with a coin that’s got a tail on either side
Oh, I-I-I-I-I-I
I'm gonna be the one who makes you stop and realize
You could have it all
We should have it all

I love it when you call
I love it when you call
I love it when you call
But you never call at all
So what’s the complication it’s only conversation
I love it when you call
But you never call at all

Guess what kind of fanmix I got this song off of? A Master fanmix? Why, yes! I love this song to an unbearable degree. I really, really do. It is probably not even worth mentioning the bounciness at this point.

6) Lemon Demon - "Knife Fight"
Let me tell you something-- I can't be beat
Oh yeah?
Yeah, cause I'm the king of the street
Well guess what man, I'll pin you to the wall
Oh yeah?
Yeah, your knife is way too small
Hey, my knife is super sharp, and that's what counts, I'm gonna make you bleed copious amounts
Yeah, well I'll be sure to thank you right after I shank you

This song, like all Lemon Demon songs, is so ridiculous, and so awesome, and by God, the moment I have enough material for it, I am so making a multi-fandom vid set to this. Knives! Fighting! CAN'T YOU PICTURE IT? (Probably I am the only one who can picture it.)

Man, it's so hard to pick a final song, so I'll just go with something relatively at random:
7) Aqua - "Freaky Friday"
Freaky Friday, things ain't going my way
Everything is gone, my life is a country song
Freaky Friday, go play on the highway
Everything is wrong, what the heck is going on

I, uh. May have originally planned to use this as my Life on Mars vid, and in many ways I think it could still work, but the lyrics repeat too often, and there's really only so many times you can use the clip of him getting hit by the car. So I picked something else. I do love this song, though. Also, I will upload any of these at your request, should you be so interested. And, one last time: BOUNCY!

I realize most of you are probably sick of my endlessly talking about Due South--and yes, I realize I haven't talked about Heroes, since, oh, January, what with my sudden obsessions with, respectively, Torchwood, Psych, and Life on Mars, so maybe some of you have been skipping past my posts lately, which is fine, 'cause I do that too; I just want to make some vague acknowledgment that I am aware of how increasingly off-topic I've become. I have no doubt that the Heroes mojo will return in full force once the show does, it's just that there's so much other shiny stuff I've never seen before, and, well, shiny.

I could get all flaily plot-wise with Life on Mars, which is nice, because, y'know, it's cohesively good, and Heroes...somewhat less so. Psych was just fun, and Heroes never really was, except for the odd Hiro moment. (I miss those moments.) Torchwood had both fun and some surprising awesome character stuff, even if overall I think Heroes is the stronger show. Due South is fun, pretty (CKR and Paul Gross for the win, of course, but I'm kind of grooving on Ramona Milano too), and has moments that just make you stare and go "okay, I am 95% positive they would have made out in the next scene if they hadn't gotten distracted", and also it has scarily huge amounts of really great fanfiction all over the internets, which does not help at all. There's nothing quite like a ten-year-old fandom for accumulating stories. (Except, of course, for a fandom that's been around even longer than that; I'm kind of afraid of classic Trek fandom in that regard. I mean, I bet they could fill libraries.) Whereas I have read pretty much 80% of all the Heroes fanfiction I would be interested in. Also, Due South stories are happy and largely angst-free (although I have read a couple short, excellent and rather similar stories that made me want to 1. cry my eyes out and 2. write my own story along those lines, horrible person that I am), without all the problems that come from incest and all that. Why can't Heroes be happy? Oh, right. Drama. We've discussed that.

So, uh, this is my obligatory late-night rambling post; join me next time, when I dive fully over the cliff and post a comprehensive character analysis of Ray Kowalski. What, you think I'm kidding? I'm not kidding. Jesus Christ on a pogo stick. *hangs head*

Scads of free time + itch to do something that will not deplete precious levels of Due South fics before DVDs arrive + sudden burst of determination = oh hey I finished that vid I started like two months ago. You know, back when I was obsessed with the other randomly supernatural fish-out-of-water cop show. (Due South is randomly supernatural too. Ghosts, mostly. In closets.)

Summary: Sam Tyler is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
Contains spoilers through the end of the show.

Speaking in a purely theoretical manner, mind you, were there to be some sort of ridiculously large picture featuring all the major slash pairings I can think of, 1) would femslash be included, because really I can only think of Buffy/Faith and they'd be very lonely if they were the only ones, and 2) would Captain Jack Harkness have to be there with Ianto, or could he just be there on his own? I mean, I wouldn't really say Jack/Ianto is one of the largest pairings out there, but it would be unforgivable to not include Jack.

(This is about 80% theoretical, mind. I'm not nearly comfortable enough with my art abilities to do it yet, and also I've kind of never drawn, oh, almost all of them. Still, I've actually got quite a good list so far: Kirk/Spock, Starsky/Hutch (let it never be said that I cannot go old-school), Jim/Blair, Fraser/RayK, Mulder/Krycek, Angel/Spike, Jack/Daniel, John/Rodney, Doctor/Master, Clark/Lex, Sam/Gene, Sam/Dean, Nathan/Peter, House/Wilson, and wasn't there some Highlander pairing or another? I would prefer not to leave things out just because I'm utterly unfamiliar with them. It must be comprehensive. So, if there's anything I've missed, feel free to chime in.)

Oh, and: no, I haven't forgotten about the latest episodes of Torchwood; I've been a bit incredibly busy, so I haven't bothered to write anything up about them, but I shall make a post combining all of them probably sometime in the following week. Let me just say that I loved 'A Day in the Death', was pleasantly surprised by 'Something Borrowed', thought 'Out of the Rain' had so much more potential than what they gave it, don't actually have very much to say about 'Adrift' at all, and am torn between quite liking some parts of 'Fragments' and narrowing my eyes at others. Don't you fucking do that to UNIT, Chris Chibnall. I barely know them and I'm still defensive of them.

Right. Off to go read more porn about a character I haven't met yet. Ta!

Watched Master & Commander, as am very weak-willed. Good movie. Jack Aubrey's hair does not really fit my requirements, but that was tolerable as it turns out Paul Bettany is actually quite more adorable than I remembered. Also, I had a couple lovely bits of spot-the-actor; "dude, that's the kid from Rome!" came easy, though "holy shit, that's Sam Tyler's dad!" took a little longer. (The hair threw me off. I must say, he looks considerably better without that horrible seventies haircut.) And then there was Billy Boyd, of course, who was actually the reason I first saw the movie when it was out in theaters--well, actually on the very day it came out; my mom is a very dedicated Patrick O'Brian fan. I went with her because, well, it was 2003 and I was fully in the grip of a powerful obsession with Lord of the Rings, but of course I liked the rest of the movie too, especially the parts with Stephen, because seriously, Stephen. I think my slasher tendencies may have been rising even then, at the early age of thirteen, as I have vague memories of taking an active interest in those scenes in the cabin with the violin and the cello. I have totally come up with an overwrought rationale as to why they chose those particular instruments, by the way; violins are the flashier, more in-your-face breed of instrument, whereas cellos provide the backbeat and move much smoother and more subtly. They both produce quite lovely sounds on their own, but put together? Even better.

...yeah, I've actually been reading the odd bit of fic about them for the last couple years, because I was already vaguely familiar with them and I never say no to a good story. I suspect I'm going to have to read the books now. Drat it all to hell.

Incidentally:

ME: Do we have the Master & Commander DVD?
MOM: Yeah, I think so. Why?
ME: Sudden urge to watch it.
MOM: Hunky Paul Bettany, or hunky Russell Crowe?

IT'S LIKE SHE KNOWS ME.

...ooh! Almost forgot. They are almost certainly going to eventually make a movie out of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, so: Paul Bettany = Jonathan Strange, Y/N? TOTALLY Y.

So, I pretty much still love my drama group more than most other aspects of my life, possibly because we are so danged awesome, but possibly also because, through an interesting twist of conversation, I can get a guy to say, "Yeah, we're all gonna get laid! Unprotected sex! (raises hand for high-five from Other Guy) Other Guy, gimme some of that!"

And the best thing is, he had no idea what he said until I pointed it out to him.

Also, because I can get into conversation with a girl, remember that she once referred to herself as a "computer girl", remember that she reads fantasy novels, mention these things to her, ask her "So, are you familiar with...fandom?", and get into a long and very happy conversation on the subject. I mean, she mostly hangs around The Pit, and she prefers not to read porn, but she seems quite intelligent and reasonable. And she is just friggin' adorable. Seriously, she actually looks like a tiny Disney princess. Granted, the medieval garb and hairstyle adopted for the play might help with this, but it fits so well with her. She's like a pretty little pixie! And this marks the first time I have ever actually admitted just what the most acknowledged pairing in the Heroes fandom is (she doesn't watch it, but she's amenable towards it), and while she initially got very wide-eyed and giggly, a further description of why it's the most acknowledged made her admit that it did sound intriguing. Mostly she's an FFVII girl, apparently, though she got her start in Harry Potter. Really, what modern fangirl didn't get her start in Harry Potter? So we don't really share any fandoms, and she finds LJ hard to navigate, but still. Ally.

Cannot watch Torchwood until Sunday. Wargle. Apparently Reaper is back, which, on one hand, yay, but on the other hand, am two episodes behind and will only become more so. But then, there are only a few episodes left anyway, so it may not be that big a deal. Also, am attempting to find Blackpool, because, er, one of my fangirl-converts watched all of it through Youtube and demands that I and another girl watch it with her on an actual television. I should feel vaguely embarrassed that one of my disciples has reached farther than I, but really, it's kind of awesome.

(Cannot stop listening to Life on Mars soundtrack. SEND HELP)

You know that hour? Everyone has that hour. Before you go to work, or before you have to go to bed, or before you need to leave for the airport. You have a full hour, so it's a useful time. You could get a lot of stuff done in an hour. Homework, or prepare a report, or write, or whatever you want. In fact, maybe you should do some of those things, because it's a full hour, and maybe you don't get a lot of full hours. But for some reason, you just. don't. want to. The homework can be done later, the writing feels a little forced, you don't really want to vid, watching TV feels like a waste of time. But it's a full hour. And you think you should be doing something, but you can come up with legitimate excuses for not doing anything. So you write LJ entries and refresh your flist endlessly and try to get that song out of your head and wonder when it got to be so hard to get two characters to kiss, dammit. (Alternately: why the hell aren't there any clips of Sam Tyler drinking? THERE ARE NONE. I CHECKED. HE SPENDS HALF HIS TIME IN THE PUB, BUT HE NEVER DRINKS ANYTHING. I know he drinks wine in his apartment a couple times, but the pub is a much, much better fit.)

blahhhhhh thirty-six minutes left until bed. time to watch more vids. oh yes. that is clearly the answer.

Upon having seen the first four episodes of Psych: yeah, so, is it wrong to have lascivious thoughts about Lassiter pushing Shawn up against a wall? They've certainly got the manhandling part down. (I was going to say, I think I'm starting to get a thing for abusive law-enforcement relationships, but Sam and Gene actually sort of care about each other, whereas Shawn and Lassiter...rather less so.)

Okay, pilot for a new Brit show called Being Human: god I hope this gets picked up, I love it. It may suffer from Pretentious Vampire Syndrome and what I'm sure will be a heavy helping of boring love interests, but it's gayer than a bloody Christmas tree and totally, totally adorable. Dammit, why is there another adorable Brit named Annie with a lovely accent and cute hair? It is distinctly unfair. So, the show's about a lanky, laconic vampire named Mitchell and a nice, adorable werewolf named George who move into a flat haunted by the aforementioned and equally adorable Annie, and it's all very sweet and very, very gay if you ignore the boring vampire-society bits, of which there would probably be many if the show was continued, but it's a show about monsters trying not to kill people and it makes use of Amy Winehouse's Rehab, and it is the kind of show where the leads settle down in a pub and talk about which houses in Hogwarts they'd be sorted into (and Annie likes Hufflepuff, bless her), even if there's boring vampire drama after that. And did I mention it's very, very gay? There's one sequence that really emphasizes it, of course (and oh boy, what a sequence it is), but there's stuff beyond that, like the way Mitchell keeps defending George to the other vampires, or how they don't seem to have much of a concept of personal space between each other, or how George is completely comfortable with Mitchell seeing him naked, or how they, y'know, live together and work together and don't have much of a life or un-life outside of each other and now Annie. Plus George is played by the guy who was Midshipman Alonzo in 'Voyage of the Damned'--I knew I recognized him from somewhere--and the whole thing was created by Toby Whithouse, who wrote 'School Reunion' for Doctor Who and 'Greeks Bearing Gifts' for Torchwood, and it's just all so very adorable. And dramatic. Well, I'm sure they'd get better with the drama in time. But how can you not love a show with lines like this:

GEORGE: Right, what would you do if you won ten million pounds?
ANNIE (automatically): Buy Colin Firth.

And that is a werewolf and a ghost. ADORABLE. (Besides, I was lost the moment they used Rehab. I like shows that know how to use music properly.)

(Also it's actually got a good werewolf transformation sequence, which is not something that happens, ever, so it must be treasured when it does.)

They tried to make me go to rehab, but I said no, no, no...

One of the more annoying things about being a vidder: having to go through sixteen bloody hours of material just to find one ten-second scene, and completely failing to find it, and having no idea in which of the sixteen hours it might be located, and being unable to continue the vid without that one bloody ten-second scene.

I'm not just imagining it, am I? There was a scene where Sam looks into the bathroom mirror and his reflection has black eyes? OR AM I JUST DREAMING THINGS AGAIN.

(Also, I find it interesting that "a scene where Sam looks all evil with black eyes" would actually need to be clarified as to which Sam you are referring to. THERE ARE TOO MANY SAMS.)

It is perhaps a testament to my very nature that I had to wrestle with myself for several minutes over the issue of whether or not I really wanted an icon of the Master with a Clefairy; it is an even greater testament that apparently I did. (I did manage to stay away from the one of Sam Winchester with a Rattata.) Blame [info]rionaleonhart for making the damn thing. Wasn't my fault at all.

Of course, it's not in me to do anything in small quantities, so I grabbed a couple Life on Mars icons from [info]copperbadge, too:

I mean, I'll probably be tired at some point, and maybe I would like to express it when that occurs.

Yes, that's an actual screencap, and yes, it's not particularly emo for something with which to express unhappiness, and would you turn that down? I think not. Incidentally, I now have more icons of John Simm in his various incarnations than I do of Nathan. Uh. Not really sure how that happened, but I promise I'll get back to our family flyboys sometime soon. Really.

(Also, the Life on Mars fandom apparently uses a rating system based on the various colors of Cortinas. I LOVE THE INTERNET IN GENERAL AND FANDOM IN PARTICULAR.)

CANNOT STOP BLATHERING ON ABOUT LIFE ON MARS, SEND HELP

First, a little rec, because I did finally find a few good fics out there (there are more, I'm sure, but I'm always a bit leery of treading into a new fandom): I am pretty certain this makes me a horrible person, because I found this story to be absolutely hilarious, though it was probably meant to be a bit unsettling. It's called Not Like That, it's short, maybe PG-13, and the best summary I can give is: Sam's a battered wife. HILARIOUS, NO?

Secondly, I totally started drawing this well over a week ago, so it's not entirely part of the latest round of madness. Really. You can check my archives if you like. It's the first thing I drew on my shiny new laptop, which, well, probably says something about me. "How can I test out my tablet? GUYS KISSING."

(It is also the first kiss I've drawn that I vaguely like, even though it certainly has its flaws.)

I always find it very strange when people say they don't like something that I like (usually not saying it to me, of course--I usually just run across it on other journals and so on), because then I get confused and wonder if I'm not supposed to like it either (because sometimes they have good arguments as to why they do not like it), and then I decide that I just must be a happier person than them because I don't spread so much hate around, and then I feel guilty about thinking I'm better than other people. Very strange.

(And then I get that weird sick feeling in my stomach because they vaguely hint at something that might be said in Ashes to Ashes regarding a character who is not in it, but that is probably specific to this instance and not any other time when someone says they don't like something that I like.)

So clearly the best course of action here is to watch the, er, decisive final scene of Life on Mars again and stop thinking about everything else.
